Julia Burns is an interactive and multimedia artist. She has exhibited in galleries and institutions in Spain, Italy and the United States, including MediaLabMadrid and ViSLAB at The University of Sydney. She uses software-based interfaces and multimedia art to create a confronting experience for the audience. Her aim is to challenge the viewer by not only demonstrating a context-driven system that reacts to the viewer's motions and decisions, but additionally influences the choices that they make.

In late 2006 she demonstrated The Outsider, where the viewer is picked out from a crowd
and then ostracized by the tracking system. At First Draft Gallery, Julia recently exhibited The
Gaze, an interactive video sculpture, featuring a young man watching TV in his room on a
plasma TV screen embedded into a mattress. A non-linear narrative encompassing the virtual
character and his audience is produced as viewers move around him and within his personal
space.

Currently enrolled in a Master of IT at Creativity and Cognition Studios, UTS, Julia gained artistic experience from her studio residency at MediaLabMadrid Spain and Spazio Gheroarte, Milan.  She did an internship at the Guggenheim Museum in early 2005, subsequentially exhibiting at El Centro Cultural Conde Duque for Banquete 2005 under the umbrella of MediaLabMadrid and ARS Electronica.  Her latest residency and second exhibition at First Draft Gallery as well as her more recent piece at beta_space, Powerhouse Museum, have welcomed her return to Sydney.
