THE GAZE
Interactive video installation

First Draft Gallery
Sydney, 2007

Viewers are invited into the living space of Josh, a single boy living in the city.  He watches television lying on an uncovered mattress in his bleak room.  A fluorescent light hangs from the ceiling; the remnants of last night’s get-together still apparent.  The sequence on the television screen across from Josh is a slow-motion loop of himself dozing peacefully.

Josh admires his image and jostles lazily on the mattress.  As viewers enter his space, they interrupt this peaceful, private scene.  By watching the boy gazing at his television, they introduce yet another observer into the dynamic, and simultaneously obstruct his view.  Their intrusion irritates Josh and he reacts loudly, urging them to move.

Inspired by Andy Warhol’s cinematic style and Tony Ousler’s video sculptures, this piece presents a challenge to its viewers.  Their movements trigger an interactive recombination of film clips from a database, thus producing a non-linear narrative encompassing the virtual character and his audience.

Special thanks to Ardrian Hardjono (software developer), Saman Jebelijavan (sound artist) and Josh Carter (actor).
Also for the support and TLC of Balint Seeber.
